D4 has smoother combat, more modern skill system and loads of QoL compared to D2. Atmosphere, story and itemization are unfortunately not even close to D2 imo. It does have some form of endgame, which D2 does not have. If you like playing multiple characters, D2 has more playtime to offer.
They feel like two different but similar games. Diablo 1 is all about being methodical, carefully choosing spots to save, checking corners, and playing with deliberate crowd control tactics. But I also like zipping around and destroying things en masse in Diablo 2. They're both satisfying to play in their own ways. With a darker atmosphere, art style, and story alongside the classic skill tree setup, Diablo 4 feels a lot like a modern take on Diablo 2's formula, more so than Diablo 3 did. Diablo 4 even Its a brainless, higher difficult = higher numbers game. This is diablo 3 in a nutshell. Regardless of difficulty the 1st playthrough is story mode and everything is rather easy, the game even holds your hand more by only giving you loot your class can use and giving you access to all the abilities you could ever want.

They had tried too hard to make a sequel to Diablo II, rather than making Diablo III its own game. The drop rates were too low—they had misjudged player psychology, believing that a hard search would be welcomed. Never even realized mobs were tougher. Guessing as how I never even noticed it, its probably like mobs health is the equivalent of /players 2 or 3. I don’t think mob health or stats actually change, they just use smarter AI supposedly. It’s probably pretty hard to notice.

D2 harder than I remember and I like that! From running out of stamina and using a stam potion to running into a special mob, getting half your life taken off and making you panic and run away hahah oh man I'm only a lvl 7 pally and I'm having a blast!
